The 2020 competition is now CLOSED to new entries.
Competition format and rules
Entries are invited from children who live or go to school in the St Albans District, including Harpenden, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, Sandridge, Park Street and London Colney.
Entry will be by recording in the first round, submitted via this website, and should be no longer than 5 minutes.
There is no fee for entry.
Entries will then be judged by a preliminary panel, and finalists invited to perform live in the Cathedral.
Categories are divided into Primary and Secondary, for soloists and ensembles as follows:
Primary Solo (Instrumental and vocal)
Primary Choir
Primary Instrumental Ensemble
Secondary Solo (any instrument – to be sub-divided by the judges)
Secondary Solo (vocal)
Secondary Choir
Secondary Vocal Ensemble
Secondary Band
Secondary Orchestra
Secondary Instrumental Ensemble
Secondary Pop Group
Categories may be amalgamated at the discretion of the judges. When all entries are submitted, categories will be allocated. The judges may split some and amalgamate others as has happened in previous years.
The Competition Finals, which will be held again in the Cathedral Nave, will be on Sunday 1 March 2020 starting at 1.30pm.
Winners in the Solo categories will each receive a cash prize and certificate; winners in the Ensemble categories will be awarded a certificate and trophy. Winners of each category may be invited to perform at an event in St Albans Cathedral later in the year following the finals.
Prize winners from the 2019 competition are not eligible to enter this year.
